The sixth annual HCC Summer Winds
tournament, a NEFA
points
event, took place on a blistering hot and humid day. Forty-one
players from as far away as Maine tackled the rolling sloped
hills. This was the first singles tournament on the new course
layout. Kelly Conroy
swept his division with a course-record 3 under par. There were a
lot of newcomers braving the heat. Fortunately, the lobby of the
Bartley Center was cool and quiet, a welcome respite from the intense
workout on the course. We also had two hole sponsors in this
tourney: Sean McCabe for Hole 1 and Quack for Hole 10.

Cameron Gallant fires off a
drive from the new tee 1 position at the start of the tournament.
Note Sean McCabe's hole sponsor sign on the tree.
This was the first tournament for Jason Beers. Here he shows his extraordinary power to command his disc into flight.
New for this tourney were the FlyPads on the back 9, which made for much better footing off the tees. Robert Longeill played a consistent two rounds under difficult conditions. Here he fires a drive off the fourth tee. Robert's son Zach proved a tough competitor. Here he watches his challengers drive off of tee 3. Kristina Bayer, the sole competitor in the Women's division, makes an approach on hole 10 as Brian Kozicki, the sole entrant in the Master's division, watches. The venerable Rick Williams, seen here making his approach on hole 10, was also the sole entrant in his division. Alan Thresher powers a shot on the slopes of hole 12. Tim Matusko didn't need the summer temperatures to keep the heat up on his competitors. He's shown putting on hole 5. The cliff shot off of the 11th tee awed many of the players, though the long walk down to the fairway didn't. Nyles Johnson drives off the tricky 7th tee as Alan Thresher and Tim Johnson watch. Nyles went on to win the Grandmaster division. The players came to the lobby of the Bartley Center to relax in the air conditioning and rehydrate themselves. As usual, Karen provided lots of great food. Bruce Gallagher shot only the second recorded hole-in-one on the course, a line drive off of the 11th tee. He also swept his division. Tim Matusko locked up the AM1 title with an impressive 1 over par. Zach Longeill won the Recreation division an impressive 4 strokes ahead of his nearest competitor. Bruce and Brian brought some "schwag" for some extra CTP enticement. After the awards, players went out to the parking lot to throw at a light post. The first challenge was for a putter, bag and Vibram keychain. Though Jason Charpentier actually hit the post, his disc didn't land the closest to the pin. That honor went to Cameron Gallant, who poses here with his winnings. The second challenge was for a collection of graphic novels, and the winner was Will Raich. Not to be shown up, Pete Charron offered two collectors discs from his store Pure Flight and the winner of that CTP was Andy Allen. It was a fitting end to a really hot day of disc throwing. |
