| The first Winter Winds tournament took place on Saturday, December 8, 2007. There were six entrants, all opting for the Amateur division. That meant no one took home the top prize of the DGA M14 polehole. But everyone had a great time, and we couldn't have asked for better weather. Under sunny skies with temperatures in the 40s, it was a perfect disc golf day.
Play began at hole 17 led by the group of Dave Campolo, Terry Plotkin and Joey Pellegrino. They're pictured here finishing hole 18. The air during the morning round was brisk but calm and the slopes were icy, making the discs slide like toboggans.
The second group included returning champion Karl Molitoris, Gary Seldon and Michael Morin. In the photo above, Gary's disc looks eerily irridescent as he drives off of the eighth tee.
After both teams played all 12 holes, they returned to the warmth of the Bartley Center for some pizza and drinks. By that time, the sun was softening the ice and the footing was much more stable. But that's when the tournament earned it's name: the unpredicatble winds began blowing, taking otherwise promising birdie shots and turning them into bogies. Above, Michael Morin tests his mettle against Mother Nature on the ninth tee.
The hearty players persevered. After 24 holes, Karl Molitoris clinched his second HCC victory at two over par, with a 76. Pictured above, he comes out of the rough to complete hole 10. Joey Pellegrino, in his HCC debut, took second place with a total of 89. And coming in third was HCC regular Michael Morin at 91. As his prize, Karl took a golf vest donated by the HCC Foundation. Joey took a bag of discs. The remaining players divvied up the other golf vest and some HCC windbreakers, also donated by the Foundation. Thanks to everyone who participated! The first Winter Winds tournament was a lot of fun and inaugurated a new HCC tradition. |
